  Help!

  i was attracted by a girl on the first sight...i don't feel it's too much to say that it was one of the most exciting moments for me ever, which is just another ordinary monday for her.

  she is the only one that let me feel complete when i see her every time and this feeling lasts until last monday i gave her a note saying how i really feel about her and my expectation for a cup of coffee with her and being a friend.

  last wednesday, my friends told me that she came to supermarket where we work twice that day alone..obviously it was for me..i mean for a reply to me.

  Yes, A JW has to be kept in a "rule-cage." That is exactly what the situation should be called. Those who wish to associate with an observant JW generally must step into that cage to do so. Trying to stay out of the cage and still socialize will cause great internal distress and conflict for the JW. The worst thing I have done in my life was to make a boy who wanted to date me climb in the cage with me when I was in high school. Nearly twenty years later, and he is still in the cage. Please, whether you decide to try to see this lady, whatever you do, don't climb in the cage with her. Shoshana

  Gerard, the substantial facts of the situation to which Pelidoro refers in his letter are quite different than the ones in the article, mainly because the article refers to an ELDER, making it fundamentally the same as the recent cases with the Catholic church: priests and church employees. I find that in the case of an elder, the claims concerning the illegality of covering up such dangerous behavior by a formal represenative of the organization is far more promising. Should WBTS lose a case for covering up abusive representatives, it will have the tendency to blow the cover off. This will help the rank and file to see that the practice (as opposed to the official policy) IS to keep a lid on it. I am not aware of the Catholic church being called to task for parishoner on parishoner abuse. However, what would distinguish JW parishoner abusers from Catholic church parishoner abusers is that JW parishoners are sent out in the public, door to door, where a known (by elders) abuser may have contact with unsupervised children...If something untoward occurred in that setting with an unwitting householder, WBTS could quite possibly be held responsible, if it was known that the perpetrator was a predator, and s/he was allowed (required, really) to go out in service unsupervised. In order to maintain a cause of action for negligence, the defendant absolutely MUST have a legal duty to the plaintiff. I think legally the WBTS is right that there is no legal duty to control the behavior of their general membership. As JWs we don't really want to see the legal difference because our behavior WAS controlled by the elders. Just because they CAN control doesn't mean they are legally bound to. As far as warning the congregation: I see no reason why an elder can't mention, as an aside to a parent with children, "I always make sure I am with my children when 'Br. Letch' is nearby." It is an absolute statement of fact that reveals no privileged information. Additionally, if the information came to an elder by a victim, then it is not privileged. Under certain circumstances, they CAN be compelled to reveal it in court if the victim consents. It is the confessor, not the confessee, that can claim the clergy privilege. Every month, it seems, it gets closer and closer for the boys at Bethel to get their comeuppance. Shoshana

  In general, I am in favor of the "priest penitent" privilege. However, in this case,there are facts that lead the reader to infer that this was not a "confession" situation, but more of an employee disciplinary situation. There is a huge difference, when one congregation's leadership knows that a member is prone to dangerous conduct, and says nothing to a new congregation. It is another when it knows that one of the organizationally appointed representatives and leaders actually commits such acts, or has in the past, and reassigns him to cover up criminal conduct. By sending him off to other congregations without a clear indications that he was a danger, and they knew it, the first congregation becomes liable for his negligent acts. As an elder, this guy was basiclaly an employee, making his "employers" (the local congregations, and the WBTS) liable for their negligence by placing him in his positions of leadership. This legal theory is called "respondeat superior". Torts was last year though, today I need to study evidence...Is this admissible? (I think so, but won't bore you with the analysis) Shoshana

  a chapter of my life that has lasted 5 and 1/2 years has reached its final page and the book is now closed.

  (no, i'm not talking about my sex life, that's been more than...erm, well, never mind).

  I am a bit biased about the power of education, being a teacher, and all, but I get very emotional when I hear about someone earning a degree. This is the most spectacular accomplishment in your life thus far, and it is incredibly impressive. What I am most impressed with is the example you have set for your children that education is goal than can, and should be reached. Education grants a person the power of choices, and more choices is definitely better than no choices. Congratulations, and may all your dreams come true!!! Shoshana

  on top everything else, i finished my conversion.

  i am officially jewish.

  it was a far more meaningful ritual than anything the jw baptism had to offer.

  The Jewish faith has always accepted converts. I myself worked with two rabbis in my locale, one was reform, the other was conservative. My beit din (court) was presided by three reform rabbis. When I was in my early twenties, I embarked on this process for the first time (just after leaving JWs), and found myself on the phone with an orthodox rabbi. Being young, naive, and very busy with college and starting my career, I only did enough research to know that I could never live an orthodox life. I had already escaped one high control group. I wasn't about to trade it for another. I should have gotten a second opinion right then and there, but I was operating on a basic assumption that ALL jews only considered orthodox conversions to be real. When I reconsidered it last year, I learned I could convert in a reform or conservative tradition, and not feel I was converting to anything but Judaism. The local Chabad boys (cuz one never sees the Chabad "girls") weren't too happy about it, but the conservative congregation has accepted me wholeheartedly as has the local reform congregation (which I consider my home base), so blatantly named up above by a fellow poster. I don't think that it is a coincidence that JWs are drawn to Judaism. I have called the Jehovah's Witnesses a Jewish apologist cult for many years now. There is something innately familiar about it, but oh so much more spiritual, fun, life-affirming and respectful. Aack, I must get back to studying Evidence. Thanks everyone. Shoshana

  JW Prep Schools?!

  i was just reading another thread that mentioned something that knocked me over!

  this thread mentions the existence of jw prep schools!

  can anyone enlighten me on this topic?

  One of these such schools takes horrid advantage of my mother. She is a legally credentialed teacher and is "on staff" of one of these "we are not a home school" corporations. She spends hours on end grading work of kids, getting paid hardly anything so that the school can say a "credentialed" teacher is the one doing the work. The work arrives daily by mail from all over the country, and the kids have learned it on their own "at home." However, what she does can be done by any conscientious sophomore in high school, using the teacher's edition of the book. All she does is score it. She is called a teacher, but she is really just a "reader." As a professional educator myself, I am offended by the value she has put on her fabulous education and experience. She is selling it for practically nothing. As Suze Orman says, "When you undervalue what you do, the world undervalues who you are." Shoshana

  I just double checked in my handy dandy "asset locator" that the online legal research company sees fit to give to law students. It says the same thing that this link does. It's a little clearer, though. This Whelen guy is definitely the trustee...however, the other two guys, Eichler and Betz are owners. The deed does not say HOW they hold title, and if the actual deed as recorded doesn't say, a court would interpret it to mean they are 50-50 owners (I'm 98 % sure that's true in Pennsylvania). So if one of the owners dies, his share goes to his heirs, and that is whomever he left it to in his will, which could have been the other guy. The actual deed on file could also have granted a right of survivorship, which in my family we called "winner takes all" after a very nasty battle with my step aunt whose father died before my grandmother. There is nothing on this deed that grants ownership to JW congregation, only that a JW congregation granted it to them (for $1). What is not public record, though is who exactly is the beneficiary of the trust of which Whelen is trustoring. Additionally, this property was not conveyed into a trust (from what I can see-those are usually really easy to see, an owner conveying it into the "Eichler Family Trust". One could only speculate...Anyone know if there were any local "legal" issues in Huntington Valley PA around the time these elders got the Kingdom Hall for a buck? This looks like asset shielding to me. Hmmm. (and who says posting on this board keeps me from studying for my properties midterm....). I also checked "Jehovah's Witnesses" in Pennsylvania. They are on the deeds to about 20 pieces of property that immediately popped, usually as local congregations. Didn't run WBTS, cause we already know they own tens of thousands of proeprties in the country. Shoshana.
